Nevarrans have a particularly militaristic society. Members of the Military often garner the most wealth, and hold places of nobility. A member of the military often holds more rights then what an artisan, farmer, or labor worker might. The King, who is descended from the Pentaghast clan, has full control of the army.
Nevarrans do not bury their dead like most of Andrastian Thedas, even with the adoption of the White Chantry. Instead of burning their dead, they mummify their corpses and place them in tombs. Nobles often start constructing their tombs from a young age and are usually extremely large and elaborate, and once completed and the creator dead, filled with boobie traps. Tombs are prime candidates for grave robbers, who traipse through the ruins in search of wealth and rare artifacts. Occasionally, the College of Enchanters and the University of Nevarra City sanction expeditions to collect artifacts from the tombs for 'scholarly' purposes.
Nevarrans have a unique relationship with magic and death. They believe that when a soul of the dead crosses the Fade, it displaces a Fade spirit. In order to provide safe hosts for such spirits they mummify the corpses and place them in elaborate crypts in the Grand Necropolis. This task is entrusted to a secretive order of mages, "Mortalitasi," founded by a Tevinter mage named Vitus Fabria who first preached the idea. It's gray-robed members are not deprived of wealth and political power as they often serve as advisors to Nevarran nobility, including the kings. [10]
Since they rarely leave Nevarra, much of the Mortalitasi's practices are shrouded in an air of mystery and fear, even to other mages outside the nation's borders. They are rumored to experiment with necromancy or even to be a death cult, but whatever the truth of it they are arguably the most well-schooled mages outside of the Tevinter Imperium.[11]

Politics:
Most Nevarran leaders have been members of the frequently militarily-gifted Pentaghast clan, under whom alliances with other Free Marches states have been courted or coerced to form a powerful confederation under Pentaghast leadership.[1]
A long war against Orlais over the mineral-rich Blasted Hills, a region between the two countries ended during the Blessed Age with a Nevarran victory. However, rebellion was fermented in the conquered area due to the imposition of harsh taxes by the Nevarrans, as well as the support of Orlais.[2]

Places in Nevarran nobility are decided by service in the army, and amount of military skill almost 99% of the time. It is rare to see a merchant as a noble, though not unheard of. Often, high ranking officers in the military will bribe the King to earn their way into noble positions.
